Thomas began his automotive career at Ford Motor Company in 1968. As Executive Director of World Wide Automotive Planning, he led the development of a U.S. and European consensus to globalize Ford’s powertrain operations. This accomplishment became the foundation for the development of Ford 2000— the globalization of Ford’s enterprise.
As Executive Director to USCAR, Thomas led Big Three research collaboration efforts with the government to develop fuel efficiency improvement technologies. He assisted in the formation of the Army’s National Automotive Center (NAC) to conduct dual-use technology developments for future military and industry vehicles. He opened SAIC’s (Science Applications International Corporation) Detroit Automotive practice prior to founding Automotive Insight.
Thomas received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees and received his PhD in engineering (honorary). Thomas received his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Denver.
Mike Thomas founded Automotive Insight in 2004, bringing extensive automotive industry knowledge, experience, skills and relationships to clients. Areas of concentration include development of strategy and business; supplier, manufacturing and quality competitiveness; idea generation and technology innovation; and vehicle and powertrain engineering. Our people, connections and relationships are the keys to our success.
Prior to founding Automotive Insight, Thomas opened SAIC’s (Science Applications
International Corporation) Detroit Automotive practice. During his tenure, SAIC acquired ANX -Business, providing secure, low-latency network communications for OEM and supplier data exchange. Other endeavors included developing a winning program for hydrogen fuel cell technical development with the DOE and modeling of embedded software systems for improved quality.
Thomas began his automotive career at Ford Motor Company in 1968, and served 30 years in worldwide strategic, product, technical and business planning; product development; and powertrain and vehicle engineering and program management.

Subsequently, Thomas led Ford's Powertrain complexity reduction initiatives to improve engineering and manufacturing efficiency, supplier cost reduction and quality competitiveness.

From 1983 to 1987, Thomas led Ford Brazil’s Product Development during the implementation of the Escort and Cargo programs for domestic and export sale, and directed the technical support for Ford’s merger with Volkswagen to form Autolatina.
Thomas was born and raised in Indiana. In 1964, he received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees and received his PhD in engineering (honorary). He served as an officer in the U.S.
Army during the Vietnam War. (Automotive Insight is a service disabled veteran owned small business.) In 1968, Thomas received his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Denver.
